This is a common question from people writing a formula to calculate a score in their form. You need to know which function to use and what goes inside it. A quiz in Google Forms has no formulas and a formula in Google Sheets runs only after the response is submitted, so neither one can work out the score in the form. With Formfacade, you get built-in functions to assign points for answer choices in multiple choice, checkboxes and grid questions and calculate scores. Your users will see the result in the form itself. Even better, you write one line in the Calculate option and there is no script to look after.
Let's start. Create your form and write these functions in the Calculate option of its Score question.
- On the page that opens, name your form, click Create form and click Proceed.
- You will land on the form's "Edit" tab. The "Assign points" dialog opens about 15 seconds later, so wait for it. AI score setup is picked. Click Proceed, click Send and click Next. Click the × to go back to the "Edit" tab.
- Click on the Score question, then click on the gear icon. Click Answer, delete the POINTS() that is already in the Calculate option, write the function and click Save.
Score function can be used to assign points to answer choices in multiple choice, checkboxes and grid questions and calculate the total score.
Syntax:
SCORE(scope, point-1, point-2, …, point-n)
where
- scope - determines whether to assign points to a specific question in the form, all questions in the section, all questions in the form or only the questions that have the matching search term in the description
- point-1, point-2, … point-n - points to be assigned for different answer choices (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) etc in sequential order
You can set the scope to ALL in the score function to assign points for all the questions in the form and calculate the overall score.
Syntax:
SCORE(ALL, point-1, point-2, point-3, …, point-n)
Example usage:
SCORE(ALL, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
SCORE(ALL, 2, 3, 10, 8)
You can set the scope to SECTION in the score function to assign points for all the questions in the section and calculate the section score. Your form needs more than one section for this. To add one, click on the last question of a section, then click on the Add page icon on the right.
Syntax:
SCORE(SECTION, point-1, point-2, point-3, …, point-n)
Example usage:
SCORE(SECTION, 1, 2, 0.5, 0.25, 0.25)
SCORE(SECTION, -1, -2, 0, 2, 1)
You can add the entry#id for a question as the scope to assign points for that specific question in the section and calculate the individual score for that question.
Syntax:
SCORE(question, point-1, point-2, point-3, …, point-n)
Example usage:
SCORE(entry###, 1, 2, 0.5, 0.25, 0.25)
SCORE(entry###, -1, -2, 0, 2, 1)
Note: Type @ and select the required question from the list to add its entry #id in the above formula.
You can add the search term as the scope to assign points for all the questions with description that has matching search term and calculate the score.
Syntax:
SCORE(search_term, point-1, point-2, point-3, …, point-n)
Example usage:
SCORE("Physical activity", 1, 2, 0.5, 0.25, 0.25)
SCORE("Food & diet", -1, -2, 0, 2, 1)
Gridscore function can be used to assign points to the answer choices for specific rows in a grid question and calculate the score. Your form needs a grid question for this. If it has none, click on a question and change it to Multiple choice grid in the list of question types.
Syntax:
GRIDSCORE(question, rownum, point-1, point-2, … point-n)
where
- question - entry #id for the grid question. Type @ and select the required question from the list to add its entry #id in the above formula.
- rownum - determines the rows for which the points must be assigned to calculate the score. This could be single row or multiple rows. For example, [2, 3, 5, 10] will select the rows 2, 3, 5 & 10
- point-1, point-2, … point-n - points to be assigned for different answer choices (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) etc in columns. These points will be assigned in sequential order starting from column 1. Example usage: GRIDSCORE(entry###, [2, 3, 7, 8], 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) GRIDSCORE(entry###, [1, 4, 5, 6], -2, -1, 0, 2, 1)
The message after submit has its own formula, so it will not follow these functions. To show the score, click on the gear icon on the last "After page" row, click On submit, select Show customized message for this button, delete the message that is there and type your own, click on the @ option and select the Score question.
If you need to assign points with a formula, a quiz in Google Forms cannot do it. With Formfacade, you use the SCORE function for multiple choice, checkboxes and grid questions and the GRIDSCORE function for specific rows in a grid question.
